A Home for Christmas

A Home for Christmas

You can listen to the story here, or read below: In 1994, two Americans answered an invitation from the Russian Department of Education to teach morals and ethics (based on Biblical principles) in the public schools. They were invited to teach at prisons, businesses, the fire and police departments, and a large orphanage run by the State. It was nearing the holiday season for the orphans to hear for the first time the traditional Christmas story. They told them about Mary and Joseph arriving in Bethlehem and finding no room in the inn, the couple went to a stable and found a manger, where Jesus was born and placed in the manger. Throughout the story, the children, according to one of the Americans, “sat in...Read more

Out of Humility Comes Great Things – Micah 5:1-5

A man has six children and is very proud of his achievement. He is so proud of himself that he starts calling his wife “Mother of Six” in spite of her objections. One night they go to a party. The man decides that it’s time to go home, and wants to find out if his wife is ready to leave as well. He shouts at the top of his voice, “Shall we go home Mother of Six?” His wife, irritated by her husbands’ lack of discretion shouts back… “Anytime you’re ready, Father of Four!” Sometimes we can all get a tad full of pride in ourselves through our accomplishments, the things we do, the gifts or talents we have, or the responsibilities we are given....Read more

Driving In Our Own Spiritual Circles, Part 2 – Luke 3:7-15

Have you ever watched the movie, Plains, Trains, and Automobiles? One of my favorite parts is when they are driving in that green rental station wagon in the middle of the night. John Candy falls asleep and crosses over the median. It wakes him up and he and Steve Martin look around and it looks like they’re going just fine. After a moment a car comes along side them, only they’re really on the other side of the grassy median. Steve looks at them and they’re yelling something at him only he can’t hear them. John and Steve look at them, wave thank you and drive on, but the people are persistent. John and Steve look over at them and John makes a gesture like...Read more

When Will Jesus Return?

An airliner was having engine trouble, and the pilot instructed the cabin crew to have the passengers take their seats and get prepared for an emergency landing. A few minutes later, the pilot asked the flight attendants if everyone was buckled in and ready. “All set back here, Captain,” came the reply, “except the lawyers are still going around passing out business cards.” I know. Lawyers get such a bad rap in our society. A friend of mine is an attorney and he tells me only half those jokes out there are true. But you know, nobody ever gets on a plane, even lawyers, expecting it is going to crash during that flight. Could you imagine you get on a plane and ask the people...Read more
The Mission of the Son of Man

The Mission of the Son of Man

Proper 20: Pentecost 18 If I said, “Silly rabbit,” could you finish the saying? Of course, we all know, “Trix are for kids.” When I was a child, no matter how the rabbit would try some trick to get some Trix cereal, something would happen and he would fail. Then the kids would all say, “Silly rabbit. Trix are for kids!” As a child I often wondered why the rabbit never understood something so simple. “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise. But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.” When reading our Gospel lesson for this...Read more
